I think theres a mistake, ive neva been to the Us, but i watch a lot of series from there and i always hear "the police are", i thought "police is" was wrong in both countries
Array ( 2 months ago by PrivateEnglishPortal)
@hanoit
strictly speaking, 'police' is singular in American English
If we're talking about the police as an institution, then probably we'd use the singular. So "The police is part of society".
But if, as in your example, we can imagine individual police officers standing by the roadside, then perhaps we'd be more inclined to use the plural.

Very intense video but lots of essential information. The differences between the different grammar aspects are very clear. I also liked the use of the American and British flags as visual aids with all the various captions. When making presentations like this one is there anyway you can cross out mistakes "The children is" and put a tick next to "The Children Is?" As that could be a better way for the students to distinguish between what's correct and what's incorrect.

shouldn't we say "Informations, Advices, furnatures" ? because piece of means part of..isn't it true?
Good question! As I ... ( 2 weeks ago by PrivateEnglishPortal)
Good question! As I said in my video, in many other langauges you do use the nouns you've mentioned in the plural 'countable' form. However, these particular nouns are considered 'non-countable' in English. So it would be wrong to say 'furnitures', 'informations'. The only way to make these irregular non-countable nouns plural is by using 'a piece of ' or ' pieces of'.
