It's a song about life, really. IMO it's about two people hitting absolute rock bottom before they realize what they've been doing and overlooking "all these years". He catches her cheating and instead of just seeing that for what it's worth he sees the bigger picture as well.

I had the privilege of sitting with Mac one night at his home in and interviewing him for a Muscle Shoals songwriting festival. He told me hit played the first A minor chord and sang the song through the very first time. He never writes down lyrics, he writes in his head. Incredible!! Mac is one of the best songwriters of all time, but also one of the great guitarists as well.
