you have 28 years worth of hit songs to enjoy and I'd suggest you seek out two collections: "50 #1 Hits", which contains 51 songs and the CD "22 More Hits".
Both collections showcase his vast amount of hit singles and he's had more hits since those CD's were released. "River of Love" is his most recent #1 hit. He has a brand new single coming out called "Living For the Night".
So, I think younger people coming along get the message that a majority of the record labels in Nashville don't want steel guitar's on their recordings and this lack of support causes the decline in younger people wanting to learn how to play it.
I think George never really strays far from pure country. Even this song with it's tropical feel has that steel guitar solo...you can't get anymore countrified than a steel guitar...so shame on those who don't want to see George continue to evolve while remaining country.
the country conversion that took place at some point in the mid '90s and then the second wave of newcomers that "found" country music earlier this decade don't really like country music or else they would've liked it when it was the "My truck died" crap as the one person put it. They only like a particular "sound" and not the format itself.
