From watching the video, I think it's about a man who was neglected and possibly abused by his mother and who became abusive/neglectful to his wife and child. The man ends up having to be taken care of by the same daughter who he had neglected. The song is about the man realizing how he messed up his daughter "think i broke the wings off this little song bird."

For those who've yet to see one of the already posted explanations is about a man on his death bed remembering the many regrets of his life. The video reflects this through showing a circle of abuse story in three different era's following the father who suffered a emotionally distant and in some cases abusive mother, than his own emotionally distant marriage and unresonsiveness to his daughter and than finally showing his daughter breaking the chain by loving her own daughter.
